Let’s begin with a few terms and their definitions:

Box Partitions are a type of interior packaging which separate and protect products typically packaged in cartons and other containers by creating individual cells into which the product is placed. Sets of chipboard or corrugated strips are cut to size, slotted, and interlocked to form a grid of cells. Partitions are not typically made in common sizes, but are custom designed for each product application and made to order.

Chipboard is the common term for a non-bending paperboard which has variations in appearance as to color, shade, speck, etc., and is composed of mixed waste papers. Solid fiber partitions are environmentally friendly, being constructed of 100% recycled and 100% recyclable paperstock.

Corrugated is the common term for the material widely used in the manufacture of corrugated boxes and shipping containers. A sheet of corrugated is typically made up of a fluted corrugated sheet and one or two flat linerboards. The corrugated medium and linerboard are made of containerboard, a paper-like material usually over ten mils (0.010 inch, or 0.25 mm) thick. Paperboard and corrugated fiberboard are sometimes called cardboard, although cardboard might be any heavy paper-pulp based board.

Air cells are end cells that do not hold product. They are used to provide a protective cushion between the product packaged and the inner wall of the carton or to simply fill in excess space in a carton.

Arrangement refers to the layout of cells in order of length then width. Example a 4 x 3 would be 4 cells along the length of the partition and 3 cells along the width.  This is important because reversing the numbers may change the cell size.

Box ID refers to the interior dimensions of a box. Partitions are typically sized 1/8” smaller than the carton it is placed in.

Manufacturing Tolerances for box partitions are +/- 1/16” in length, width and height and +/- 5% of board caliper.

Overall Partition Size is listed as Length x Width x Height.

There are some Special Features available for your box partition set, including several styles of locks (tab, friction, slit, y-entry), finger notches, corner cuts, etc.  We can also identity your box partition with part number printing or embossing. There are some limitations to these features based on size and material, just contact our Customer Service Group with the particulars and we will figure out what will work best for you.

Partition Caliper is the thickness of the board expressed in 1/1000 of an inch and written as a decimal of an inch. Board with a caliper of .030, for example, is generally referred to as “30 point.”
